My name is Jared. This is my blog. Well, technically, it's my "new" blog. I used to have a Xanga, but that one sucked really bad, and I kind of stopped blogging for a year. But now, I think I'm going to start again. Who knows how long it will last. All I know is that Tumblr is a whole lot better.

BORED?

Hulu is a great place to find full episodes of TV series and entire movies. I recently just watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and I enjoyed it. Here's a great way to spend some time if your summer is going a little too slow and you need something to fill a couple hours. Enjoy!

Going Green

After all this talk about “going green”, I feel like doing everything in my ability to help the world.

Recently, if you have digital cable, the Science Channel (part of the Discovery Channel family) converted to “Planet Green”, offering an entire slew of eco-friendly focused programming. Intriguing, lots of ideas about how you can help the environment, but still a lot of wishful thinking. Even though there are a lot of options in how you can improve your home, I doubt there are a lot of people going out and buying solar panels and other things for their homes. The only eco-friendly thing that I have at home are those energy-saving lightbulbs. (By the way, these are amazing. They are better than original lightbulbs, plus you keep them on for hours and you can touch them with your bare hands because they never get hot. AMAZING!)

The only program that I manage to watch on Planet Green (channel 103 for people with COX Digital Cable) is “Greensburg”, the documentary about that small town here in Kansas trying to rebuild green. It’s interesting overall, but I have this feeling that since this is probably the most attention that Kansas has gotten in a while, it perpetuates the stereotype that all people from the midwest come from small towns and have bad accents. Oh well, what are you going to do?

Here is a super long document that lays out the city-wide plan for Greensburg. I went through the majority of the file (skipping quite a bit) and it still took me a while to get through it all. It’s a little bit repetative, but otherwise thorough. (I guess that’s what you need when compiling a comprehensive plan for rebuilding a city). Yeah, I was bored and decided to read up on how a city, that I will never live in, is going to rebuild.

Anyway, when Greensburg gets settled again (which they said to be sometime in 20 years), I will definited pay a visit.

Oh... this can't be good.

As of Wednesday, May 28, 2008 1:51 AM, here are my stats for playing “Draw My Thing” @ http://www.iminlikewithyou.com.

Ratings:     #1       1808

Plays:        #6       457

Golds:        #3       290 (out of 407 medals won)

My summer is so boring already that I’ve reached the top 10 on all three of its charts for this dumb game.

I think I’m going to Best Buy tomorrow to buy Super Mario Galaxy so I can waste my time in front of the TV instead of my computer.  Or maybe I should finish that stack of literature that has piled up the past year. (And by literature I mean: Stephen Colbert’s I Am American (And So Can You); Lemony Snicket’s last book, and a year and a half worth of MAD magazines, plus a few Simpsons comic books.)

Or I could start on real school work like college stuff, EE, and summer reading, but I think it might be a little too early for that.

What Makes America Great...

A sappy “essay” that I wrote for my government class…

One thing that not only makes America great, but also unique, is its diversity.  This diversity ranges from cultures, to languages, to differing viewpoints.  Without a doubt, the large spectrum of diversity that America has been able to sustain is due to the open mindedness of its people.  We are able to share our ideas and opposing view which allows us to take into evaluate the different perspectives on a situation.  Tolerance and understanding comes from the expanding of people’s minds through this type of discussion.  Also, the United States is recognized for its vast diversity in its culture.  The “American” culture, is not anything specific, but instead is a blend of various societies that have immigrated to America through the years and have eventually established their own niche within the American society.  These differences have been able to coexist in this country because of the many amendments that have been established in the US Constitution.  The unity of the country is so important that our leaders have made sure of its protection by placing it in the most powerful document in the world.  Whoever truly accepts what American offers is then given the opportunity to establish themselves as an individual within our society without having to succumb to the pressures of others to conform to an established set of ideas.  By allowing each person to follow his or her own dreams, everyone contributes to the society in their own unique way, which continues to make America  more diversified nation.
